What to do after a job interview

Tips to help you keep the momentum going after an interview.

The worst thing you can do after a job interview is nothing at all. We are going to share a few tips with you on what to do after you finish a job interview.

Know the hiring process

After you are done with the interview you should ask about the process moving forward. Is there going to be a second interview? Do they notify everyone that they interviewed or just the successful candidates?

Make a note of the people involved in your interview and their contact details. This will be useful if you have any follow up questions and for your thank you note.

Send a Thank You note

A lot of job seekers forget this step. Sending your interviewer a thank you note is polite and shows them that you are interested in the role. Plus it helps keep your name at the forefront of their minds so you should aim to send one within 24 hours after the interview.

Thank the interviewer for taking their time to speak and meet with you. Make sure you are not just reiterating your abilities. It should remind the interviewer why you are the perfect person for the job. If they were any areas that they were concerned about during the interview, supply additional information to address those areas such as work samples that demonstrate a skill or area the interviewer was concerned about.

If you were given a timeline of when you should hear back from them you should respect that. You don’t want to come across as too desperate and annoy them.

Reflect

Reflecting on your interview is a great way to figure what you could improve on in future interviews. How would you rate your performance? What went well and what didn’t? A great way to reflect is by discussing it with someone else. This is going to help you improve your communication and interviewing skills.

You should also reflect on whether the company and team would be the right fit for you and if the position is right for you.

Don’t give up on the job search!

Even if you think you have aced the interview you shouldn’t abandon your job search. You should not put all your eggs in one basket because anything can happen. Having alternative applications will keep your job search moving because you will have something to fall back on.

You will also have the added power to choose which job opportunity is right for you.

Be patient

The job search and recruitment process takes time. If the hiring managers or recruiters are taking a long time to get back to you, you shouldn’t take that personally. Whilst you are waiting it can be easy to start overthinking and over-analysing your interview (which is why it’s important to carry on applying for other roles because it keeps you distracted!). Try and relax and know that you did everything you could.

Get some feedback

If the deadline they set for getting back to you has passed you should contact them and politely ask them when you should expect to hear back from them about the position.

If you have not got the job, you should thank them for taking their time to contact you. Ask them for some information on why you weren’t hired. This will help you identify areas to improve on in your next interviews and it will also demonstrate your professionalism.
